The Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm based Var, South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2YOs in both 2016-2017 and 2017-2018, has been enjoying an outstanding season this year.
At the time of writing, Var sired runners have already banked more than R8. million in what has been an interrupted season (due to the COVID19 lockdown), and his six black-type winners this season include G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Vardy as well as surprise recent G1 Computaform Sprint hero Rivarine and G2 Merchants hero Eden Roc.
He has also had another good season with his two-year-olds, with Var (currently second on the Leading Sire of 2YOs list) responsible for six two-year-old winners (at the time of writing) notably G3 Capetown Noir Kenilworth Fillies Nursery winner Delta Queen and G2 Pospack SA Fillies Nursery runner up Miracle Flight.
Var, whose regally bred son Talk Of The Town is set to join his sire at Avontuur, is also making his mark as a broodmare sire, with the Forest Wildcat damsire of Tempting Fate and Pray For Rain, the first two finishers in the 2020 G3 Godolphin Barb Stakes.
