Flashy grey After The Rain took a step up in class in his stride when making all to land a very competitive looking pinnacle stakes at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday.

The Gareth Van Zyl trained colt, a winner of his last three starts, faced a smart field in Sunday’s www.tabgold.co.za Pinnacle Stakes (1600m) but proved up to the task in convincing fashion.

The likes of Gentleman’s Wager, News Stream, and joint top-weight Crown Towers raced further back in running, with the latter racing wide on the bend.

Khumalo kept his mount going in front, with After The Rain digging down deep in the closing stages to win by just over a length and a quarter.

Priceless Ruler, conceding the progressive winner 7.5kgs, took second spot, with third-place finisher Socrates another half a length away.

The lightly raced winner stopped the clock in a time of 94.88 seconds.

Bred by Limestone Thoroughbred Trust, After The Rain has now won his last four in a row, and four of just six starts in total.
