PADDOCK STAKES QUEEN IN JOEL STAKES BID

The former South African raced Queen Supreme looks set to make her British debut in Friday’s G2 Unibet ‘You’re On’ Joel Stakes at Newmarket.

Now in the care of Andrew Balding, the Irish bred mare is set to have her first race since contesting the G1 Cape Town Met Presented By Cape Racing back on January 21st.

Mike de Kock commented: “Andrew has reported that Queen Supreme has impressed him and that she is doing very well, and this is encouraging for South African form. I won this race with Eagle Mountain and Soft Falling Rain, so it has a good history for us.”

Queen Supreme will race for Jessica Jell and new partner Gary Barber, the Hollywood film producer who has 50 films to his credit, including ‘Seabiscuit’. Barber has already been successful at the Breeders Cup winning the Juvenile Fillies Turf with Catch A Glimpse, the Turf Sprint with Belvoir Bay and the Breeders’ Cup Mile with Tourist

Queen Of Supreme is one of eight runners carded for the Joel Stakes-a race won previously by South African champion Soft Falling Rain, as well as by fellow G1 winners, Eagle Mountain, Cityscape, Kameko and Benbatl.

The latter, runner up in the G2 tote Celebration Mile last time out, is set to oppose Queen Supreme and six others on Friday.

Other notable rivals include former G1 Queen Anne Stakes winner Accidental Agent and this year’s G1 Qipco 2000 Guineas runner up Master Of The Seas.

Bred by Tom Hassett, Queen Supreme won seven of 14 starts, for earnings of R1 595 700, in South Africa -winning the G1 Cartier Paddock Stakes in both 2020 and 2021.

A daughter of Darley’s remarkable Exceed And Excel, Queen Supreme is out of the Gone West mare Call Later, who also ranks as the dam of Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes winner Be Ready and Heatherlie Stakes victor Call Me Handsome.
