Owner Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum and trainer Mike de Kock look to have yet another smart prospect on their hands in the form of Malmoos.
The latter, the second top lot sold off the 2019 National Yearling Sale, made a big impression when romping home when making his debut at Turffontein on Saturday afternoon.
Malmoos, a three-year-old colt by Klawervlei’s late Captain Al, was all the rage for Saturday’s Itsarush.co.za Welcomes You Maiden Plate (1200m) with the well bred sophomore eventually jumping a 5-0 favourite.
Always up with the pace, under champion apprentice Luke Ferraris, Malmoos was quick to put the race to bed. The de Kock trained colt hit the front 300m from home and drew off in style to register a three and a half length win at the first time of asking.
Bred by Varsfontein Stud, Malmoos was knocked down for R4 400 000 at last year’s Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale. (The colt was entered for sale as Vasco Da Gama).
Closely related to the Captain Al sired dam of the Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum owned G3 Fillies Mile winner Ghaalla as well as recent G2 Epol Umkhomazi Stakes winner Erik The Red (by Captain Al), Malmoos is a full-brother to G3 East Cape Derby/G3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup winner Captain Splendid.
He is out of the Fort Wood sired Spook Express Handicap winner Justthewayyouare (a four time winner up to 2600m), with the latter a half-sister to G2 Premier Trophy/G2 Peninsula Handicap victor Master Of My Fate.
The latter, a son of Jet Master, is the sire of recent G1 winners Tempting Fate (Golden Horse Medallion) and Sentbydestiny (G1 Premiers Champion Stakes) -both of whom have been nominated for Equus awards.
