The Peter Muscutt trained Gentleman’s Wager downed some more highly regarded rivals when he captured Sunday’s Listed Michael Roberts Stakes (1750m) at Hollywoodbets Scottsville.

One of three runners in the race for his trainer, Gentleman’s Wager, who appeared somewhat out at the weights, was allowed to start a 25-2 shot, as consistent Gauteng visitor Astrix was sent off tote favourite.

The favourite, however, proved a disappointment, with Astrix finishing a well-beaten fifth.

In contrast, Gentleman’s Wager, who received a well-judged ride from Tristan Godden, with Godden bringing his mount with a strong challenge shortly after the field turned for home.

Hitting the front 300m from home, Gentleman’s Wager kept finding more in the closing stages before going to score by nearly three-parts of a length. Runner up Sir Michael, who raced at the back of the field for much of the race, caught the eye taking second spot with rank outsider Fight Song taking third.

Fifth in the Listed Christmas Stakes last time out, Gentleman’s Wager claimed his first Listed success in a time of 108.61 seconds.

The veteran seven-year-old, bred by his part-owners Mrs Devachander and Laurence Wernars, has now won nine of 33 starts for earnings in excess of R500 000.

Gentleman’s Wager is the 60th stakes winner for his triple G1 winning sire Oratorio, and the gelding is out of G2 Gold Circle Oaks winner and G1 Gold Cup runner up Princess Of Light.
