Saturday’s G2 WSB Live Games Southern Cross Stakes (1000m) at Kenilworth has attracted a small, but top-class, field of fillies and mares.
Star attractions for this year’s Southern Cross are dual Equus Champion Celtic Sea and 2019 Southern Cross winner Run Fox Run.
The latter, beaten just a short-head by Celtic Sea when the pair met in last season’s G1 South African Fillies Sprint (pictured above), showed her well being when scoring a deceptively easy win in a pinnacle stakes over 1100m at Kenilworth back in October, and the flying five-year-old, a winner of seven of nine starts and with the added benefit of race fitness, looks the horse to beat here.
Champion Celtic Sea will be making her first start since finishing second in July’s G1 Jonsson Garden Province Stakes and this is likely to be a stepping stone for bigger things. However, the triple G1 winning daughter of Captain Al is too classy to ignore, even if the 1000m trip of Saturday’s race does look on the short side for her.
The speedy Hello Winter Hello caught the eye when winning the Listed Laisserfaire Stakes, and holds Southern Cross rivals Phil’s Dancer, Roll In The Hay and Delta Queen on that effort. She is, however, rated between 20 and 24 points inferior to Run Fox Run (above) and Celtic Sea and would need the first two fancies both to fluff their lines to score here.
The Vaughan Marshall trained Mirage looks to have a tough task on her hands and looks outclassed here.
