Former star South African racemare Ebony Flyer came up with a smart-looking winner in Britain on Sunday.

Her three-year-old daughter Ducal Crown, making just the second start of her career, overcame a rough start to the running of the Watch Racing Free Online At Coral Fillies’ Novice Stakes, over seven furlongs, to break her maiden by a neck.

Despite being slow away, Ducal Crown, under a good ride from David Probert, made headway later on in Sunday’s contest and got up to win close home.

A daughter of now-deceased Cartier Champion, and former Drakenstein Stud based sire, Duke Of Marmalade, the Andrew Balding-trained Ducal Crown had been fourth, of nine, on her only previous start last December.

Ducal Crown is a half-sister to former G3 Cape Classic third Cot Campbell (by Trippi), five-time winner Captain Of Tortuga (by Captain Al) and the useful Black Silver (by Silvano).

She is out of the Jet Master sired Ebony Flyer -a winner of 8 of her 13 starts including the G1 Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas, G1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes, and G1 SA Fillies Sprint.

A full-sister to the dam of Equus Champion, and now retired G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Vardy, Ebony Flyer is a half-sister to another Equus Champion in the form of Captain’s Lover – who, like Ebony Flyer, captured the G1 Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas.
