AL MUTHANA OUTCLASSES RIVALS TO WIN WOLF POWER 1600

Fresh off landing Saturday’s G2 New Turf Carriers Western Cape Stayers with Sparkling Water, former champion trainer Mike De Kock picked up another feature race when his charge Al Muthana scored a visually impressive win in Sunday’s Listed Wolf Power 1600 (1600m) at Turffontein.

Partnered for the first time by Muzi Yeni, the Australian bred Al Muthana was a well backed favourite, with the son of Deep Field eventually going off as a 25-11 tote favourite.

Yeni gave his mount a very confident ride, settling Al Muthana at the back of the field, as long-shot Whorly Whorly went out to make the running.

Turning for home, Al Muthana was unleashed towards the inside of the Turffontein track, before powering away to score an emphatic five and a quarter lengths. Stone Cold was a well-beaten second, with Willow Express another two and a half lengths further back in third.

Bred by Shadwell Stud Australasia (he races for the estate of his late breeder), the progressive four-year-old claimed Sunday’s first-place prize of R109 375 in a time of 98 seconds.

Al Muthana, who has now won five of 11 starts including his last two races in a row, is the 13th stakes winner for Newgate Farm’s prolific winner producing sire Deep Field.

Sunday’s Listed Wolf Power 1600 winner is out of the Redoute’s Choice mare El Daana -a dual winner who was victorious in the G2 VRC Edward Manifold Stakes and who also rates as the dam of G2 VRC AV Kewney Stakes queen Wawail.

El Daana has a yearling filly by Wawail’s sire Lonhro that made $150,000 at the Magic Millions Weanling Sale and she is entered for Inglis Easter as Lot 146 by Sledmere Stud.
