The Sanne family’s Oldlands Stud have enjoyed a superb season in 2020-2021, with Oldlands bred horses shining in some of South Africa’s greatest horse-races.

Not only did the Hermanus based farm breed this season’s top-class fillies Netta (Where’s That Tiger) and Zarina (Master Of My Fate), Oldlands also bred this season’s top-class two-year-old Ambiorix (Vercingetorix), winner of both the G1 Gold Medallion and Listed Summer Juvenile Stakes, and are also breeders of Adorable (Captain Al), the dam of the 2021 G1 Vodacom Durban July winner Kommetdieding.

Adorable (below right) is back at Oldlands, where she is safely in foal to Kommetdieding’s sire Elusive Fort, and the former Gardenia Handicap second has a soon to be yearling colt by Selangor Cup winner Gold Standard (Trippi).

Understandably, Oldlands’ Barbara Sanne is very excited about the season ahead’s foaling and breeding plans.

Mamalushka (Kitalpha), the dam of recent G1 Workwear Garden Province Stakes winner Zarina, has a weanling colt by Potala Palace (Singspiel) and is in foal to Zarina’s sire Master Of My Fate, while Listed Lady’s Slipper winner Darling Moon (dam of Ambiorix) has a weanling Elusive Fort filly and is in foal to Canford Cliffs (Tagula).

Unfortunately, Souplesse (Indigo Magic), the dam Netta (Where’s That Tiger), a six length winner of the G2 Gerald Rosenberg Stakes, died last year.

Other exciting prospects for Oldlands include Fusiachi Pegasus’ stakes winning daughter Feel My Love (who is in foal to Var), Idler (the dam of Derby Trial winner Gift For The Gap) in foal to Ambiorix’s sire Vercingetorix, and Trippi’s well bred daughter Guns And Roses (who is from the same family as dual G1 winner Erupt among others), who is in foal to Querari.

Oldlands, whose previous alumni include the likes of G1 SA Classic winner English Garden (Camden Park) and smart Dubai performers Lucky Find (Rich Man’s Gold) and Sanshaawes (Ashaawes), is situated on 200 hectares of land in the Hemel ‘N Aarde Valley near Hermanus. The combination of the Mediterranean climate, as well as being in an area free of African Horse Sickness makes this an ideal location for breeding quality, well-developed horses. The farm works on biodynamic principles, with Elsenburg Agricultural College advising on soil samples so the mixed grazing is grown on balanced soil.

Oldlands are offering a select group of horses for sale, including Moon Guide (pictured above), a Var half-sister to Ambiorix. Safe to say, this filly has plenty of paddock value to go with her obvious appeal as a racing prospect!
